VILLA HELIOS: A Greek vacation in a beautiful villa, on the famed island of Hydra.
Hydra is a place to swim, hike, eat, day-dream, sleep, walk, gaze at the scenery, read, and rest. The tranquillity of the island elicits an immediate sigh of relief and is a pervasive background to your entire holiday: the perfect antidote to life in the fast lane.
Description of Villa Helios
Villa Helios is an upscale property, ideal for up to four couples or for an extended family.
Walled for privacy (there is virtually no crime on the island), its many terraces abound in bougainvillea, jasmine, oleander and plumbago.
Imagine a multi-terraced garden, as well as a large vine-covered terrace overlooking the port and the sea; this will be your centre of activities. A perfect spot to enjoy an evening drink while watching the sun set over the distant islands.
You can also sit around the pool or on a small ideal-for-breakfast terrace, or choose another one for getting-away-from-the-crowd, to read, doze and sun yourself.
It is located on one of Hydra's highest hillside streets, above the sheltered Bay of Hydra. The views from Villa Helios are spectacular - every room overlooks the whitewashed houses, the waterfront - alive with fishing boats and elegant yachts, - and beyond the Saronic Gulf, the neighbouring Peloponnese.
The property has two comfortably furnished buildings: one contains a sitting room, dining room, well-equipped kitchen, and a mezzanine study; in the other, there are four double bedrooms (two with double beds, and two with twin-beds). All the terraces have a picture postcard view.
There are three bathrooms, one with an outside shower.
The caretaker looks after the pool and the garden; there is a change of linen mid-week. Transformers for shavers, etc. are in the bathrooms. The villa's kitchen equipment will keep the gourmet cook in you more than happy - you can cook at your leisure or eat out at many of the wonderful restaurants within walking distance of the villa.
Bring:
your favorite tapes and CDs for romantic evening listening on the terrace
your beach towels, bathing suit, swim and sun at The Rocks
your hiking boots, if you're serious about tackling the hills
your camera!
your cell phone
your snorkelling equipment
NB.On arrival, you and your party will be met at the port and donkeys will be there to carry up your luggage, and everyone else, if you like! Donkeys provide the only taxis on the island. The steps and terracing at the villa are unfriendly for toddlers or for people with arthritis or other mobility limitations.

The Greek Island of Hydra
Hikers and walkers will find a carpet of wild flowers in the spring and fall, and a multitude of destinations in the monasteries and convents which dot the hills. Maps and suggested itineraries are in the Villa for your convenience.
Architectural and photography buffs will be fascinated by the old mansions dotting the town, built when Hydra was a naval power in the eastern Mediterranean.
The place is famous for its churches and chapels, many great examples of Byzantine architecture and interior decorations; supposedly, one for each day of the year!
Hire one of the small boats in the harbour, bring a picnic lunch, and spend the afternoon on your very own private beach!
Hydra's waterfront is where you observe and participate in the social life of the island: cafÈs, bars and taverns where locals and tourists gather; a maze of narrow streets with the old Venetian-style houses; restaurants offering good food and ambiance; shops, and innumerable churches and chapels.
Socializing at the port cafes, the locals you'll get acquainted with will be from all walks of life - fishermen, wealthy Athenians who maintain summer homes there, shopkeepers, writers, peasants, painters and sophisticated expatriates from many countries.
There are no cars, motorcycles, mopeds on Hydra. No noise, no exhaust - the only noises you will hear are the donkey's, the roosters, the church bells and the occasional ship's whistle.

Testimonials Replies to our question: What did you most enjoy about your stay at Villa Helios?
"I can tell you that it was without a doubt one of the most pleasant experiences my family has ever had. Our week was flawless. Your property is beautiful, livable, and very
well equipped. We found ourselves spending much of the time there and taking most of our meals there, which is not what we had planned. The views were spectacular.
We spent every evening watching the sunset over the port and enjoying local Greek dishes which we prepared in your beautiful kitchen. I feel that a week was almost too
short of a stay and could probably have spent a month at Villa Helios."
- John W. Laramore, M.D.

"The peace and privacy - spaciousness - and variety of indoor and outdoor living areas. The VIEW! The climb is well worth it. The garden, flowers, pool - lovely. Fabulously well equipped. For a family with 2 chefs it was a joy. We particularly appreciated the garden complete with cooking herbs, and the fact that you leave books, CDs, etc., which makes it feel "homey". Your "Welcome Book" is extremely well done and appreciated."

"The space layout (lots of terraces). Fittings: like home, rather than the bare minimum. Views. Although Hydra is a "small" island, the villa is so charming that you don't want to leave it. If you can't unwind here, you need help!"

"The sun, the space, the peace and quiet, and the beautiful views. Ample furniture, home from home, nice and clean when we arrived. It's very relaxing."

"...We really did not expect a setting and facility so completely transcending the brochure description and photos. The good taste with which you have decorated and furnished the villa serve well to enhance its remarkable location."
- Mr. & Mrs. Shryer
Minnesota, U.S.A.
"Villa Helios is a wonderfully restored property of considerable charm its main attraction however is its position high above the harbour. The view over the harbour day or night must be rated as one of the great residential views of the world."
"The town clustering around the harbour is full of activity and history. There are also great walks up to the monasteries of Profitas Elias and Aghias Efphraxifas. The village harbours with their taverns are a feature and the fish is always fresh be prepared to share your lunch with the local cats!"
"We can thoroughly recommend the Villa to your readers. Madame Tilly (our rental agent on Hydra) who looks after the guests at the villa and Raymonde Laguë in Montreal are both delightful, most helpful and great sources of local information."
"If you want "feet up" and/or good walking with plenty of local atmosphere on a Greek island, traffic free Hydra and the Villa would be very hard to surpass."
